Teen Workshop:

Introduction to the College Application Process

I created a virtual workshop about the college application process that was adopted by a local school counselor.

Tools: Synthesia, Canva, Vimeo, ChatGPT, Play.ht, Squarespace, Google Suite, Slack

Challenges

  • Some teen participants may have low motivation because they are required to take the workshop by a counselor or parent.

  • Some teens may need more challenge and engagement to retain motivation.

  • Teens would enter the virtual workshop at varying levels of knowledge and performance.

Objectives

Organization Objectives

  • Support high school counselors in educating teens about the college application process.

  • Empower learners to create value in their communities.

Learner Objectives

  • Understand the steps and priorities of the college application process.

  • Teach others about the college application process.

Results

Performance Results:

  • The workshop was adopted for use by a high school counselor to pilot the program for the district.

  • Teens created presentations to educate others about the college admissions process.

Analysis and Planning

  • I used a learner persona template to conduct interviews with members of the target audience and gain clarity on the learner motivation.

  • I analyzed the needs analysis (organization and learner) to determine performance objectives and learning objectives.

  • I created a planning document to ensure:

    • Performance activities and assessments aligned with course objectives.

    • Gradual increase of Bloom’s to build and sustain learner motivation.

Pre/Post Assessment

  • I created a pre & post assessment to align with the learner analysis, learning objectives, and performance objectives.

  • The assessment was designed to measure growth after the completion of the workshop.

Learner Motivation

  • A variety of tools were used to engage and sustain the motivation of learners, including

    • Creating a realistic and relatable scenario to motivate students who may not realize the importance of the topic.

    • Creating optional, higher-level activities for learners who need challenges.

Practical Application

  • Engagement activities, challenges, and the final project ensured students were able to apply their skills in practical and valuable ways.
